Body Types | Overweight |
20mg of astaxanthin daily for 12 weeks in overweight adults appears to have antioxidant effects as assessed by total antioxidant capacity of the blood (34.5%) and reduced lipid peroxidation (32.7%), and these changes were seen alongside a reduction in LDL cholesterol (10.4%) and Apolipoprotein B (7.59%) at four weeks, leading up to the aforementioned reductions after 12 weeks in a time-dependent manner.
Superoxide distmuase was also increased (30.3%) relative to placebo.
Safety testing failed to find an adverse effect on the kidneys or liver, but red coloration of the stool was noted (likely due to astaxanthin being a red pigment) and in some persons increased stool frequency was also noted.
